RFT Music Showcase – Dave’s Picks
June 1, 2010
[show_avatar email=db@iwenttoashow.com align=left avatar_size=62]With the long holiday weekend behind us and the RFT Music Showcase just days away, it’s time to start making your picks. Part of the fun of events like this is stumbling onto a band you might not have considered before and then becoming completely enthralled with their style, but it never hurts to have a game plan.
My first pick is Rum Drum Ramblers. I accidentally walked into one of their shows at the Focal Point a while back and was completely blown away with what it is they do and how they do it. They’re working on a new album, so maybe we’ll get to hear a new song or two!
Rum Drum Ramblers – Six Feet in the Ground
Next on my list is Beth Bombara and the Robotic Foundation. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Bombara play live several times solo and with Cassie Morgan and the Lonley Pine, but I’ve never been so lucky as to catch her full band arrangement. Their self titled album is great from start to finish is on regular rotation at my house!
Beth Bombara and the Robotic Foundation – Lights
Dock Ellis is another band that I’ve never had the chance to see. I did see front man Jesse Irwin open for JJ Grey at the Duck Room earlier this year and he had the whole place falling out laughing. Great acoustic guitar work coupled with raunchy lyrics and a bright red cowboy shirt loosened up the Monday night crowd and got everyone in the perfect mood for JJ’s set.
This next part is where it get’s tricky. There are at least three bands on my list that play at pretty much the same time. Theodore is on the list and I know they’ll be great, they always are. Messy Jiverson and Sleepy Kitty are the other two and I’m really having a tough time deciding. Sleepy Kitty is a boy/girl duo that describes themselves as being mixed up in the tussle between noise and pop. Messy Jiverson, on the other hand, is more on the funky rock n’ roll side of things with a very dance-able sound. My curiosity has me leaning towards Sleepy Kitty, but it will have to be a game time decision.
Sleepy Kitty – Gimme a Chantz!
The Union Electric is another band that I’ve yet to see but are for sure on my list. Their gravely vocals and thick electric sound is something I need to hear in person. I’m a sucker for bands with a heavy guitar and I have a feeling these guys will deliver.
The Union Electric – Youve Been Served.
If I have anything left in the tank, the Northwoods will be my night cap. This duo left me super impressed with their guitar skills, beat boxing, and song writing when I saw them open for Cassie Morgan and the Lonely Pine. Their set should be a good one and it’s one that I hope I’m still standing for.
And don’t forgot, this is the last week to vote in the for your favorites in the 2010 RFT Music Awards.
