It’s hot outside. Like, reconsider-your-life-choices hot outside. Thankfully, we’re blessed here in St. Louis with small, dark rooms designed specifically for sitting, listening, and libating. Throughout the second half of July, STL plays host to a diverse batch of shows, ranging from a local [double] release from area favorites, Texas-based punk rock, and Appalachian-tinged highbrow ladyfolk

The last description above belongs to the young female trio known as Mountain Man, who play Off Broadway this Thursday along with notable locals The Blind Nils.

Mountain Man. At Off Broadway on Thursday, July 21st.

Formed just a couple (few?) years ago at Bennington College, the group (composed of Molly Sarle, Alex Monnig, and Amelia Meath) has been busy crafting lyrically effectual, harmonic songs which have been showcased by NPR Music and at SXSW, and among numerous other media outlets. Their debut LP, Made the Harbor, was released on taste-maker label Partisan Records.

This July, Mountain Man gave us Live at the Wintern, which is streaming in full as we speak over at Spinner. ‘The way one feels could be likened to an opening or a slamming or a grieving heart…’ they sing on “Mouthwings”. Having supported the likes of Jonsi and the Decemberists, these vocally stunning instrumental minimalists seemed poised to stand (closely together) and share the spotlight.

  1. Court says:

I saw a poster at Mud House that said So Many Dynamos is playing at Cicero’s on July 30. Which, of course they are, because that is one seriously epic local music night.

  2. Jess says:

Court: Absolutely they are playing at Cicero’s – a goodbye to Griffin show. I neglected to include that on here because I’m/we’re spoken for that evening, but it will be a party no doubt. Love those SMD…
