TWOFER: Thursday, July 25th, 2013
July 24, 2013
If you’re looking for Friday-style fun on a Thursday night, you can’t go wrong tomorrow evening. Enter our TWOFER for late July:
First, peppy popmasters Palace are set to release their LP, Summer, Don’t You Dare, at Plush. Seemingly boundless optimists, the group illustrates bright vignettes of childhood and adolescence buttressed by the very grown-up vocal chops of singer/guitarist Matt Kavanaugh and vocalist Crystal Owens.
Many of you might have met Palace for the first time last year at An Under Cover Weekend, STL’s premiere cover showcase where local artists (who play original songs) “become” a more famous band for a single performance. Palace’s treatment of ABBA turned into a straight up joy-laden dance party, and the energy Palace brings to their own work is no less exhilarating.
Doors are at 8. It’s 7 ahead and 18+: https://www.facebook.com/events/190280517788971/.
Beth Bombara and La Guerre (CHI) open.
If you’re seeking less sparkle and more Stag on the third best day of the week, Al Scorch and his lightning quick banjo lay claim to the headlining spot at Off Broadway with local support from Ryne Watts’ Hobosexuals and Jenny Roques’ Jenny & the Late Nite. The Hobosexuals (comprised of Ryne and Coop with a rotating cast of backing musicians) is the latest in a series of Watts-led enterprises that follows the now defunct Campfire Club. Roques might be better known as a part of the rowdy, all-lady STL trio Arson for Candy, and I believe she debuted J&tLN in 2013.
I can’t recommend Al Scorch highly enough if you’re a fan of the beloved, hard-to-catch (since they play like once a year and 200 lbs of crawfish are involved each time) Monads. Scorch wails on his banjo with skill and abandon and is most perfectly suited for fans and friends of the South City-side of Off Broadway.
Doors are at 8. This one’s also 7 ahead and all ages (bring an extra 3 if you’re -21): https://www.facebook.com/events/555389944525994/
Honorable mention goes to a fun thing happening at Broadway Oyster Bar: Brand new band High Scores makes their unofficial debut as they share a bill with BOB regulars, All Roostered Up, who most often provide a soundtrack of covers and originals to accompany your day drinking at the famous oyster house on Saturdays from 2-5pm.
High Scores is St. Louis musician and photographer Corey Woodruff (Ryan Spearman Band, All Roostered Up), Karl Eggers (The Dive Poets, Beth Bombara), Quinten Coe (Ryan Spearman Band, Fat City Heat), and Abe Chapman. I’ve been told to expect funk, rock, debauchery, and impressive summer beards. 9p-1a, $5 cover: https://www.facebook.com/events/189230024587402/
