TWOFER: Thursday, May 1st, 2014
April 25, 2014
[An IWTAS Twofer is a show preview post that provides a closer look at two or more concerts happening on the same evening. We hate choosing, so we identify the selling points of each gig and you have to decide for yourself where to end up. Everyone wins!]
Every now and then a weeknight pops up on my Official Schedule (aka Facebook, plus various scraps of paper on which I write things down then lose immediately) that’s so full of good shit that I can hardly believe it. Thursday, May 1st, is one such weeknight.
Head to Midtown and catch Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs (Holly + Lawyer Dave) with Town Cars at Firebird. In early March, H.G. released her twentieth(!) album, All Her Fault, twelve tracks recorded and produced over six months at the duo’s rural homestead for Transdreamer Records. The band has played Firebird before and I count that show among several unexpectedly awesome concerts I’ve attended over the years. Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs is just two folks, but those folks sure know how to craft a fun live performance.
Local support will be provided by Melinda Cooper (The Union Electric, Extension Chord Records)’s Town Cars, which is Cooper’s solo project backed by Corey Woodruff on drums along with intermittent guest appearances by other musically-gifted St. Lousians. T.C. has just about finished up a debut full-length, so expect new and good tunes from this opening set.

One of the greatest things going as far as live music in town is the show calendar at Schlafly Tap Room. First off, the concerts are always free (and the bands get paid). Secondly, the beer obviously rules, as does the food. Finally, you’ll notice recently improved sound in the room and a new stage. The folks at Tap Room, namely Brett Underwood, are damn good to local artists, so you can feel good about bringing your money and enthusiasm there.
All that to say, on May 1st, the Brainstems (rumors of their demise have been greatly exaggerated) along with Bad Dates and Shitstorm have a show in the very room about which I just gushed. Brainstems also just let loose a killer of a track from their forthcoming album, which is streaming above. This lineup assures a shaking floor, so if you head to Tap Room on Thursday, be ready for dancin’ and smashin’.
Invite your pals using this.
P.S. Humming House (Nashville) is playing KDHX’s first official evening show at The Stage that evening. You really can’t go wrong.
