Show Preview/ Ticket Giveaway Shabazz Palaces @ The Firebird Tomorrow Night
January 28, 2013
Shabazz Palaces, you guys.
Not to go all Pitchfork on you, but think Odd Future without the shock value, in a sexy side project with Corin Roddick from Purity Ring. I’m into orchestral anything, and I’m not in the business of resisting genius. Their record label calls it “Luxury as understood by the modest.” I like their record Black Up (Sub Pop, 2011) so freakin’ much. Listen to this stream of the record, then get your asses over to The Firebird Wednesday night and absorb some simple fancy hip hop.
A bit of an aside, I saw a poster somewhere that said Shabazz Palaces played a show in Liverpool with TheeSatisfaction. Oh man, that would be a killer show. But you get to see them on Wednesday open for Portland’s The Helio Sequence, which doesn’t sound at all like I remember them, but last year’s, Negotiations (also on Sub Pop) is a rewarding experience if you give it time to curl up and nap in your head. Give it a chance.
At first listen, it’s super Vampire Weekendy, and if you’re into that, you should come to the show, too.
$15, doors open at 7:30. UNLESS you’re picked to win a pair of tickets from IWTAS. Leave a comment!
PS: Sub Pop Records, though!
