LouFest Preview Part IV: The Memories
September 5, 2013
In honor of LouFest’s 4th birthday, we’re posting a 4-part series of preview posts, highlighting what we think are the greatest aspects of LouFest: The Bands (duh), The Food, The Location (3-1-4Ever), and The Memories.
As we make our final preparations for this weekend, we present out last piece in this series: our favorite recollections from LouFests past. We can’t wait to see y’all out there this year.
There’s been much discussion about the increased footprint of LouFest this year, what with new partnerships being formed, new stages being built, and a louder voice heralding this old river city as a new, national music festival destination. And I welcome all of it…which isn’t to say that seeing one of “my” local bands perform at LouFest wasn’t mystifying. Back in 2011, Old Lights, along with a few special guests, took to the big stage and introduced themselves in proper fashion to the public at large. Their sound was great, their mood was joyful, and I was living vicariously.
My absolute favorite non-music moments of LouFests past are walking through the gates for the first time on Saturday. It’s always a good feeling to pass through the gate of a festival, but walking through the gate of a great festival that is almost literally in your damn backyard is just something that doesn’t happen very often. And it’s the best.
My favorite music moment of LouFest is still the Phantogram set in 2012. I had been looking forward to seeing them play live for years and they did not disappoint during their LouFest set. The rain started up (do you all remember all the damn rain last year?!), but Phantogram kept it going. It felt good and I will probably never forget it!
Happy/Sad/Favorite Memories: I’ve been lucky enough to go with my sister, Katie, to each LouFest- but she’s not coming this year. Damn you, Colorado mountains. (Not really.) Gentleman Auction House’s performance during the first LouFest. I’m pretty sure it was their last concert, which is sad because they were my gateway drug into local music (the first local band I listened to).
I’ve got so many! But I can get instant full-body goosebumps any time I think of Built to Spill singing “Twin Falls” in front of a huge crowd, just as the sun set on the horizon behind us.
One more thing before we go: Check out LouFest’s FAQ page before you pack your bags and head out. Some regulations on items allowed inside the festival ground have changed a bit – many are the same as in prior years.
