#STLSOTD: Monday, May 12th – Popular Mechanics’ “Wasted”
May 12, 2014
#STLSOTD is an I Went to a Show.com Monday-Friday feature that introduces followers to new St. Louis music by spotlighting one track from one artist or band from IWTAS’ Bandcamp Directory of St. Louis Music. As always, we welcome your suggestions. If we pick the song you share with us on Twitter, Facebook, or in the comments section of this post, we’ll make sure to give you a shout out.
In 2013, Popular Mechanics released a substantially above-average LP on colored vinyl called Anti-Glacial. You can read some words about it from a qualified music critic and all-around smart guy here. Principal songwriter and lead singer Dave Todd’s observations are sharp and sarcastic, and peppered with comedic self-loathing. The record itself is intelligently-arranged garage rock, with enough pop and punk flourishes to bridge fans of seemingly disparate genres together. To be frank, I’m surprised that Popular Mechanics isn’t more popular yet.
I picked “Wasted” off Anti-Glacial as our STLSOTD for Monday. It’s just mildly misanthropic, and it’s a real kick in the pants to start off the week. “Wasted” displays the controlled, chaotic energy of a Popular Mechanics live performance, which is how I was introduced to the band in the first place (at an RFT Music Showcase a few summers back). If you like what you hear, Anti-Glacial is available for $5 digitally and $12 traditionally. Tell ’em we sent ya.
Popular Mechanics is Dave Todd, Andy Brandemeyey, Rick Addis, and Tim Pinkerton. They perform at Schlafly Tap Room this Saturday, May 17th with Mutts (CHI) and the Union Electric. RSVP here.
